‘A Brief History Of Tampa’s Philly Of The South-Fan Club’
04/18/2014 1st draft / 01/05/19 updated
The year was 1995; Ray Rhodes had talked Ricky Watters (the number one free agent available) that year, into coming to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles were “Starting Over” once again. Eagle fans had seen that before, maybe too many times in the past. However, that season would also mark the start of something new in Tampa Florida, the Birth of Our Fan Club.
Two die-hard Eagle fans living in the same neighborhood in the Carrollwood Florida area had a chance meeting and decided to make a day out of it. They headed down Gunn Highway to ‘Goodfellas Pub & Grill’ to watch their beloved Philadelphia Eagles on TV. Mark Farren and Mike Kline were met that day by a few other Eagle fans hanging at the bar and the club was born. The first game the club watched together was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on Sunday, September 3, 1995, and the Buc’s won that game 21 to 6. The loss was hard to take but we did discover one thing. We had so much fun that day (hanging with other Eagle fans here in Tampa) that we decided to meet at the pub again next week for the next Eagles game.
25 years later we are still at it for every Eagles game; we kept “bringing it” for every game … loud and proud of our BIRDS!
Our club was founded around one core principle: the idea of offering any Eagle fan that crossed the club’s path the best game-day experience possible. We might be 20 hours 6 min (1,042.1 mi) via I-95 S – south of downtown Philly. But that 700 level feeling, time tested forged friendships and that famous Philadelphia shared “love of team” emotion shared during all games, would make even the die-hardest of Eagle fans think they were back in Philly!
Everyone in this club bleeds “Green and Silver” and firmly believes that “DallasSucks” is a word that can be found in the dictionary. Win, lose or draw we are all hardcore Philly fans and we will never give in or give up on the Eagles.
Our club has grown over the years and now numbers in the hundreds. With that being said, we always have room for one more Eagles fan. Our football nest is always open and we would welcome the opportunity to have you join our group anytime. Whether you are just visiting the bay area or if you now call Tampa, Florida your home.
If you back the BIRDS you have found your football home here in Tampa @ Philly of the South. I sincerely hope that you, your friends, and family will plan on joining us for the next Eagles game(s)!
